Achiever Spotlight: Destiny

Our monthly Achiever Spotlight highlights current and alumni Achievers. For current Achievers, we look at how the Friends-Boston program is impacting them today. For alumni, we see the role the program played in helping them to find success after they graduated. Their stories are part of our story, and we're excited to share them.

This month, we're highlighting a current Achiever: Destiny*.

______________________________________

Destiny joined the Friends-Boston program nearly a year ago in an effort to help her to have better focus in school, and she’s quickly made a big impact. As her Friend, Addy, says: “She’s taken Friends-Boston by storm!”

Destiny is a first grader from Dorchester who's the fifth of seven children, and she has a twin brother who's also in the Friends-Boston program. She’s friendly to everyone she meets and consistently impresses Addy with her positive attitude.

Addy’s been able to work with Destiny on important skills, including academic endurance and focus. Destiny’s also participating in Circus Arts, which provides a great outlet for her energy.

In addition to supporting Destiny, Addy’s also worked with her family to ensure that Destiny has all of the help and resources she needs to thrive. That help has included getting Destiny glasses to correct her vision, as well as advocating for her with school officials during meetings.

When talking about Destiny, Addy had this to say: “Destiny and I bonded quickly over our love for singing in the car and being silly. During her outings, we like to do art, have dance parties, and go to the park. In our short time together, I have also been able to witness Destiny's moments of resilience and perseverance. We have journeyed together through getting her first pair of glasses, building academic endurance, and even trying new things like Circus Class! Since joining the program, she has lit up our space with her smile and infectious laugh, and I cannot wait to see all that she does with Friends-Boston.”

Though she’s only been in the Friends-Boston program for a short time, we’re excited to see how much progress Destiny’s been able to make. As Addy continues to partner with Destiny’s family and school, we know that positive results will continue to be seen.
