Achiever Spotlight: Mason

Every month, we celebrate an Achiever who demonstrates growth, perseverance, and a commitment to their goals. This month, we’re proud to highlight Mason, a bright and determined fifth grader who has been part of the Friends Boston community for over four years.

Mason has been working hard in school, and his efforts are showing. He recently achieved grade-level academic performance in both ELA and Math, with his progress in math standing out as he confidently mastered multiplication.

Beyond academics, Mason has been pushing himself outside of his comfort zone by participating in Stand Strong, a program hosted by the Boston Sports Museum for 4th and 5th graders. Through group events and field trips, he embraced new experiences, built connections, and took an important step toward building his sense of belonging and confidence.

One of Mason’s current goals is improving his reading skills, and his love for books is growing. With support from his Friend (mentor) Ryan, he is working through Judy Blume’s Fudge series and now reads independently for 30 minutes or more.

Mason’s perseverance and patience shine in every part of his life. At home, he is a caring and supportive presence for his mom and sister, always willing to help without hesitation. His kindness and quiet strength make him a special part of the Friends Boston community.

A moment that truly captured Mason’s determination happened during a game of Cuphead with his mentor. They were stuck on a particularly tough level for weeks, one that even many adults would find difficult. Mason never gave up. When they finally beat it together, he jumped for joy, a celebration that showed just how much resilience he brings to everything he does.

Though Mason may be a boy of few words, he values the safe space, the snacks always on deck, and the favorite games that make his time with Friends Boston special.

His journey is just beginning. With his determination, patience, and growing confidence, we know he’s going to keep moving forward and reaching new goals.
