Achiever Spotlight: Sammy

Every month, we celebrate an Achiever who has shown incredible growth, perseverance, and dedication to their goals. This month, we are proud to spotlight Sammy*, a 5th grader who’s been part of the Friends-Boston community for six years. In the face of a challenging school year, Sammy has shown up with creativity and resilience, reminding us all what it means to stay determined even when the path is tough.

Meet Sammy, a remarkable 5th grader who embodies confidence, determination, and self-advocacy. Over the past six years, they’ve grown into someone who tackles challenges with courage and approaches opportunity with grace.

At the beginning of the school year, Sammy was feeling discouraged, especially when it came to math. But their Friend (mentor), Elizabeth, discovered Sammy’s love for baking and used it as a spark. By blending math with a passion Sammy already held, they found a new way forward. What once felt frustrating turned into something empowering!

Now, even when it’s hard, Sammy keeps going. They show up, ask for help, and give it their best every day, rising above their own expectations and proving that progress is possible with persistence.

What makes Sammy truly stand out is how confidently they speak up for themselves. At just 12 years old, they communicate with a maturity and kindness that inspires everyone around them. And even through the real challenges this year brought, they’ve remained focused on their goals: finishing 5th grade strong and returning to in-person school.

Their journey is a testament to the power of intentional mentorship. Thanks to Elizabeth’s consistent support, including regular check-ins with teachers and encouragement, Sammy is more confident than ever and excited for what's ahead.

Elizabeth shared that one of the most powerful reflections of Sammy’s experience with Friends - Boston is this:

“Having a safe space where they feel seen, heard, and respected.”

It’s that sense of belonging that makes growth like this possible. Thank you, Sammy, for reminding us what it means to persevere with joy, courage, and heart!
