Achiever Spotlight: Alexa

Every month, we celebrate an Achiever who shows incredible growth, perseverance, and heart. This month, we're proud to spotlight Alexa*, whose courage, curiosity, and determination continue to shine as she discovers more about who she is and what she’s capable of.

For nearly eight years, Alexa has been part of Friends of the Children–Boston, growing from a quiet, thoughtful child into a young person learning to trust her voice and face challenges head-on. With the steady support of her Friend, Kadijah, Alexa has made incredible progress this year!

Over the summer, Alexa took a big step outside her comfort zone. She joined a focus group with Boston Children's Hospital to discuss mental health, speaking up with honesty and reflection, and even began writing on her own, something she once found overwhelming. Later, during the Pinnacle Girls Retreat, Alexa faced another test of courage on a high ropes course. With her heart racing, she whispered to herself, "You are safe," and climbed higher than she ever thought she could.

“Alex is incredibly caring and empathetic. She always makes sure if she gets a snack, I do too. She’s curious, artistic, and always open to trying new things.” — Kadijah, Friend

Moments like these show Alexa's incredible growth mindset. She's learning to manage her emotions with mindfulness, working up to five full minutes of meditation to center herself during stressful times at school. Her Friend (mentor), Kadijah, has been alongside her every step, teaching breathing and focus techniques that have become part of Alexa's daily toolkit.

Recently, Alexa sat down for an interview with The Boston Globe about school absenteeism, an opportunity that once would have felt overwhelming. When she first saw how many adults were in the room, including a few she didn't know, she hesitated and quietly stepped away. But after taking a moment to breathe and gather her courage, she re-entered the room and introduced herself with poise and confidence. What followed was a thoughtful, honest conversation that left her mentor proud and inspired. It was a defining moment and proof of how far Alexa has come in her ability to self-regulate, advocate for herself, and believe her perspective matters!

Now, Alexa is starting to look toward her future with hope. For the first time, she's imagining herself as a business owner or nail technician. Every milestone Alexa reaches is a reminder of what's possible when youth have a consistent, caring mentor by their side for 12+ years, no matter what.
